The Allegiance Mosque
The Allegiance Mosque is located approximately 500 meters from the Great Jamra of Aqaba and holds immense historical significance. It was built by the Abbasid Caliph Abu Jaafar Al-Mansur in 144 AH to commemorate the place where the first pledge of allegiance took place in Islam.
The mosque overlooks Mina from the northern side at the southern slope of Mount Thabeer, which overlooks the People of the Ansar or the People of the Allegiance. There are two stones in the mosque, one of which bears an inscription reading “Abdullah – Commander of the Faithful, may God honor him – ordered the construction of this mosque,” referring to the Abbasid caliph. The length of the mosque from its mihrab to the end of the courtyard is approximately 38 cubits.
The mosque still retains some of its original area and archaeological construction inscriptions, including a construction inscription that dates back to its architecture and another memorial from the same period, as well as a construction inscription dated in 625 AH.
The mosque was hidden from view behind the mountain but became visible after the new expansion and removal of the mountain within the framework of the expansion of the Mina hairdresser for pedestrian and bus routes within the Jamarat facility project.
The first pledge of allegiance to Aqaba took place in this place in Mina in the year 12 of the prophecy 621 AD, when 12 people from the Aws and Khazraj tribes from Medina pledged allegiance. The second pledge of allegiance to Aqaba took place in the same place during the Hajj season in the year 13 of the prophecy 622 AD, with 73 men and two women from the people of Medina attending. They called upon the Prophet to come to Medina, saying, “How long will we let the Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, be expelled in the mountains of Mecca?” The plaque still attached to the wall of the mosque facing the qiblah from the outside commemorates this pledge of allegiance.
